Presidents Closing Remarks – Mark Newby President 2015 – 2016

  • img_00202My Report is in the Newsletter so I will not repeat everything

  • I Want to thank everyone who has come today and has supported the Society in a pivotal year over the last 12 months or so

  • In 2015 we stood at the edge of the cliff but came back from the brink and we should all be proud of the effort our officers , committee and members put into turning the society around .

  • We stopped worrying about who wasn’t coming to the law society and started concentrating on who was

  • We benefited from a mostly young and enthusiastic committee and when we said we would organise something we actually did

  • We have had a great social programme with thanks particularly to Kirsten and Janice . Our sell out Ball at the crown was a great success and we benefited from great judicial support from HHJ Robinson and DJ Rodgers

  • This was followed by another excellent Presidents Raceday and most recently the Interactive Quiz Night which was a great evening.

  • Equally we have put on a number of supported training events and I hope next year’s training officer will be able to build upon the progress Abigial Frudd has made this year .
  • This year the society has benefited from having a membership officer and Anne Robertson has tackled key tasks which have dogged the society such as establishing an accurate membership database and we are now working towards a membership discount scheme .

  • We have also for the first time in a while now seen direct engagement with our MPS and this is a relationship that will develop strongly in the year ahead .

  • It was fantastic to see our members all dressed up at the annual service and legal procession in Doncaster this year and to support the schools mock trial competition.

  • We are a society now that responds to consultations and represents our members at a national level .

  • Of course this year has only been the start of the journey back and our new president Emma has lots to do going forward .

  • As for our members . If we are getting it right then please tell your colleagues and encourage them to come along and support our events . If we are getting it wrong tell us why and help us change.

  • It has been a busy and great journey and I have been honoured to represent the society over this period .

  • Of course it is also a great privilege to serve Yorkshire now as one of your national councillors and also support the work of the criminal law committee and scrutiny and performance review committee . I hope to with your support to be able to continue .
  • I am delighted now to end my journey as your President by inducting our new President Emma Beazley. I have no doubt she will be a great President of this Society and help us drive our society ever forward.
