Online Presentation: A Focus on Diversity & Awareness: LGBTQ+

The Doncaster and District Law Society are delighted to present the first of a series of online presentations with representation from The Law Society.

The talks will be delivered by members of The Law Society by leading D & I teams who will provide key facts and challenges but will also get you thinking about what firms/individuals can do to support change.

The presentation format will cover the following:

  • Introduction
  • Key facts
  • Challenges
  • National Law Society activities to address priority issues.
  • What firms/individuals can do to support change
  • Q&A

Speakers from The Law Society:

Jerry Garvey

  • Jerry Garvey is part of a D&I team which promotes and supports diversity and inclusion in the profession.
  • With over 20 years’ experience in the D&I field working in the legal sector, he brings to the role a strong insight into the issues and challenges, and what is needed to make the profession more diverse and inclusive.
  • He is the Law Society lead in shaping its race diversity strategy. Having worked on projects supporting BAME candidates enter the profession, and currently with BAME practitioners he is ideally placed to provide an expert insight into the race agenda in the legal sector.
  • The work covers understanding and supporting the needs of its BAME constituency. It also includes building engagement across the BAME legal community and managing the Ethnic Minority Lawyers Division (EMLD) committee, which acts as an interface between the Law Society and its BAME members.
  • Prior to the Law Society I worked at the RCS, helping to support their strategy of increasing the representation of women in consultant roles.

LGBTQ+ Vice chair: Paul Maddock (he/him)

Paul is a Director at DWF based in Liverpool He specialises in a range of commercial disputes including commercial contracts, shareholder matters, professional negligence claims and contentious trusts and probate.

The series starts on 23 July 2024 and the talks will take place at key stages in the diversity calendar. We hope you can join us for this first presentation which we hope will educate, raise awareness, and provide an update on what The Law Society is doing to promote diversity and inclusion.
